むむむ！
この映画は実に評価に苦しむ。
最初にこの映画を見始めたとき、英語で話しているのには驚いたが、固有名詞はフランス語の発音を取り入れているため、大目に見てもいいかな、と思った。
時代考証なども概ねしっかりしており、フランスの宮廷社会の構造、風俗など当時の貴族たちや庶民の様子はよく描けていると思う。
しかしながら、花火を使ったスペクタクルシーンで使った音楽がよくない。ヘンデルの『王宮の花火の音楽』のパクリで、５０年以上後のものだ。またカストラート（去勢歌手）に歌を歌わせているが、ルイ１４世はカストラートが嫌いだったはず。そこらへんがちょっと怪しい。
私の場合あとからこの映画のキャッチコピーを聞いたので、そのあまりの大袈裟さにかえって驚きました。私のような、ただヨーロッパの歴史物が好きな人にはいいかもしれませんが、変に陰謀だの、死の謎だのミステリーを期待すると当てが外れますね。

セットや衣装は豪華。おののき。
ルイ14世を、招き入れた領主のために、ヴァテールが、力を尽して3日間の饗宴を担います。
その、大袈裟すぎる饗宴騒ぎは、ある種、歴史的記録として拝見することに価値があると思いました。
あの当時、これほどまでの手の込んだ細工を、人力でしていたのですから。
ただ、そこに、王の寵愛を狙って、自分も地位を高めたいと考えている女性とヴァテールの恋愛が絡んで来るのですが、本当にあの女性は、ヴァテールを愛したのであろうか?と愚問が残りました。
この映画には、恋愛はからめない方が、深みが出たのではないであろうか??とちょっと残念でした。
でも、再現記録映画と考えると、あの饗宴は、本当に凄いです。

明暗、表裏。
一見、すごく華やかな場面が多く思われますが、華やかであっても本当にその場の人にとって楽しい時であるか、あるいは質素で地味な場面であってもその場にいた人にとって至福の時間かもしれない、そういう場面だけでは表象されない人間関係が上手く描かれていると思います。所詮、天才料理人ヴァテールも雇われ身、今の自分と時代や背景が変わっても共通した部分を見出せるのでは？
